Anyway, i am thinking of moving away from GC simply because it is starting to really upset me.
I have fixed SEVERAL errors and just keep running into them left and right. First CSS wouldn't work then GC didn't install dods right and on and on.
So finally got all the those to work now i am stuck bf2142. I ran the patches and installed the newest version and then ran GC, well GC cant start it. For some reason it crashes right after start up. So anyway, if anyone has any idea on how to fix this "Segmentation fault (core dumped)" thing, i would be very greatful.
And more documentation would be nice as well. There is quit literally no documentation on the LINUX release. Which you site states on the homepage there is plenty of it.
Regarding your first post: Which issue did you fix by modifying the firewall?
A very odd post indeed...
Regarding BF2142: Have you tried to start 2142 manually? I am pretty sure
it will crash then too, which means this is not a GC issue.
Be aware that the GC devs don't prioritise updates to Linux games, and the
installations of several games will therefore be either corrupt or old. You can
easily fix this by either manually installing the games yourself or by creating
your own content server. The latter is only a practical option if you have
several hosts.
The original issue was simple, although not what i thought it would be. The firewall (iptables) was set correctly for a fresh install and therefore had nothing wrong with it, GC however was not modifying or adding the services as it should have. So, that is fixed.
As for BF2142 the issue was as well simple. The syntax for starting the game that GC uses by default is incorrect. It calls PB 3 times in a row, although it has the if/else it still calls it 3 times thus three instances are started and there for creating an unstable environment. So i just edited the command line and now it works fine.
I am not sure though why you only maintain Windows distro as it is becoming the least used in the GSP world, by far it is good for start ups ect, but for performance it doesn't stand a chance.
Well, that's not entirely true. Quite a number of games perform better in
Windows than in Linux, primarily because the developers are better trained
at optimising their code for Windows. BF2 and BF2142 are examples of games
that perform better in Windows. CS 1.6, on the other hand, performs better
in Linux. You can of course tune the Linux kernel and installation quite a bit
(as you can also for Windows, though to a smaller extent), but if the code
was written with Windows in mind and the devs didn't put too much effort into
creating a good Linux release (BF 2/2142), tuning can only take you so far.
But I absolutely agree with you that Linux could be better supported
