Five of our hosts have experienced GC crash during the night. On two hosts
GC crashed when starting up the first server. These hosts seem to be among
the ones that have most problems, possibly because of more activity (more
servers as well as more players).

Thanks for the links. I've replaced GC on the five hosts and will let you know
how it goes today.

Actually, only five minutes later GC has already crashed once on two hosts
running the newest version. So not an improvement. Sad

Edit (evening): Apart from the couple of immediate crashes, GC seems to be
significantly more stable now. We've still had in the area of 60 short-lasting
disconnects today, but only four real crashes. And they happened on hosts
that were still running 5.2.0. I've upgraded to 5.2.3 on about half our
hosts now.

I'll keep you posted Smile

This morning GC had crashed on three hosts,
all of which run version 5.2.3. All of them crashed
shortly after 5 am while performing daily server
restarts. Seems like we have a pattern here. I'll
send you the dump-files by mail.

Hey Einar,

Can you please re-download the above executables (both for win32 and linux).

We actually had 5.2.4 available (which does have a definite crash fix) that I did not give you earlier.

So if you can download 5.2.4 and run it, and see how it goes - that would be great. Hopefully this fixes it.

Cheers

I did the following: For two of the hosts that
have been experiencing GC crashes most
frequently, I restarted all their servers a couple
of times. Twice was all it took to provoke a
crash. I then installed 5.2.4 on both hosts and
did the same again. I have now restarted their
servers four times, and still no crash. Smile So it's
looking good, and I will start installing 5.2.4 on
all hosts and see how it goes. Smile

Sweet, thanks.

The crash this version fixed was related to the handling of packet data, so more active hosts had a more likely chance to crash as well (as per your observations).

Seems the Linux client doesn't work:

Code:
$ ./gamecreate.x86 -f
==GAMECREATE CLIENT 5.2.4 STARTUP==
LOG: Fri Sep 12 10:01:53 2008: Starting GameCreate Client 5.2.4

Reverting to 5.2.3 for the time being (haven't
had a GC crash in Linux for ages).

Edit: Ouch! Didn't make a backup of 5.2.3. Do
you still have it around?

I've renamed the files to gamecreate-523.x86 and gamecreate-524.exe

524 for linux will needs to be recompiled, something I cant do right now, so grab 523 instead.

The good news: Not a single host has experienced
a GC crash since I upgraded to 5.2.4. Linux-hosts
running 5.2.0 and 5.2.3 haven't had the problem
either. Great job, Andrew! Very Happy

The bad news: We are still experiencing a number
of short-lasting disconnects every day. We had
~60 on Friday and 26 on Saturday. 16 so far today
(just after noon).

The good news again: The number of short-lasting
disconnects is significantly lower than the ~300-700
per day we used to have Smile
