PostPosted: Tue Mar 10, 2009 10:00 am    Post subject: Mysterious problem with DOD:S Reply with quote

Since last Update of "Day of Defeat: Source" I get a hardly believing error:

1. Starting the Server with GameCreate:

Server starts correct, players can join. But if a player spawns, he gets the message "Connection problems - Autodisconnect in 30 seconds".

2. Starting the Server from shell (same commandline, no changes to files etc.):

Everything works fine, players can spawn.

Mad, isn't it?

What i've tested to solve this problem (without success):

1. Use screen with GC

2. GC-Client 5.24 beta 2 instead of 5.23

3. Steam-Update of DOD:S with option "-verify_all"

Has anyone ideas how can i fix this problem?

The Connection problems error may be GameCreate restarting the server, check the failure reports - is the server being restarted due to a problem?

The server runs constantly without any crash. The only problem is if a player spawns ingame, this player gets this connection problem. Everytime in exactly the same moment. Server don't crash at this time.

By running the server from shell this problem never appears.

Now i've tested this on another linux machine, same problem.

I know DOD:S-Servers have (had) many problems, but this problem appears only combined with GC.

Do you have any other ideas?

Not really, I'd try seeing what the game console says etc while GameCreate runs it when a player connects to see if anything helpful comes up.

I'd also try a few more diagnostic things like reconnect to the server after the connection problem to see if they are still having an error.

Try removing the game install completely, and installing the game manually via hldsupdatetool (NOT via gamecreate).

Any console outputs don't give help. GC don't give a message in this moment, DOD:S-Logs says "Player dropped (Disconnect by user).

ALL player have this problem EVERYTIME in the moment of spawning into the map (class can be chosen -> weapon can be chosen > strat time runs -> spawn doesn't work -> auto disconnect in 30 seconds).

I've installed EVERY Source-Game via STEAM to avoid problems with old version etc.

Now I will try to make a fresh installation on a third machine...

I mean install the game server via the hldsupdatetool application.

Yes, i've installed DOD:S via this:

./steam -command update -game dods -dir /home/gamecreate/orange-box
(I've checked "Do not download..." in GC, of course.)

Fresh installation on a third machine leads to exactly the same problem.

Once again: The problem appears since the last update of DOD:S Dedicated Server. But starting the server from shell works fine.

I don't know what to try next... Crying or Very sad

Can you try some troubleshooting steps please; this does sound like a weird problem.

1) Via GameCreate Host Configuration tab, uncheck 'Monitor servers on this host for players and query failures'. This will prevent GC from every trying to restart a server due to query failures.

2) Enable screen support via Game Configuration for DoD: Source; and make sure you have the GameCreate 5.2.4 Beta client (sticky in this forum) to use this feature.

3) Start the server via GameCreate.

Be watching the server console in the screen session (screen -r to view the console).

Connect to the server as a player, and wait for the problem to occur. Make note of which log entires appear before/after the problem occurs.

Now paste the output of the screen buffer to here.

4) Stop the server via GameCreate. On the Server Overview tab is a 'Command Line' value. Copy and paste it in to your SSH prompt, and CD to the appropriate directory (which is ~/gamecreate/orange-box/).

Paste the command line to your SSH session and hit enter (prepend ./ if necessary to run the executable).

Again, join the server as a player and paste the console output and note in the console output when the problem occurs.
